Title: Building site: level 2 [Flash Player version]
Description: Look down at a group of buildings, including some with more than one storey. Think about which buildings could be seen by a person standing on the ground. Use coloured blocks to build a street-level view of the buildings. Build views from different perspectives: front, side or back. This learning object is one in a series of four objects that progressively increases in difficulty. The series is also packaged as a combined learning object.
Topics: Angles; Buildings (Structures); Cuboids; Elevation; Geometric perspective; Orientation; Projection (Algebra); Transformation (Mathematics); Visualisation
Keywords: 2D representations, 3D objects, Angles, Buildings (Structures), Cuboids, Elevation, Geometric perspective, Location, Orientation, Position, Projection (Algebra), Transformation (Mathematics), Views, Visualisation
Learning area: Mathematics
Strand: Space
Concept: Angles; Directions; Geometric properties; Location; Position; Prisms; Shape perception; Size and shape; Transformations; Visualisation
Audience user level: 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9  Audience type: Student
Age range: 8-15  Audience sector: School
Key learning objectives:
  • Students interpret and visualise 2D representations of 3D objects.
  • Students translate top view to profile view.
Educational value:
  • Encourages students to use visualisation skills to imagine different perspectives for viewing the same objects.
  • Illustrates that the perceived shape of an object depends on the observer’s viewing point.
  • Allows students to view objects from different angles and then use that information to construct a 3D scene.
Skill: Analysis; Application; Comprehension; Knowledge
Student activity: Analysis; Estimation; Experiment; Interactives; Modelling
Learning design: Experiential learning; Independent learning; Problem solving; Visual learning
